Planning for the Strip: Why the End of the Pour Matters Just as Much as the Beginning
On most jobs, the focus is on getting forms set and concrete placed as efficiently as possible. But experienced contractors know the job isn’t finished when the pour is complete, it’s just entering the next critical phase. How you plan for stripping formwork can have a major impact on your schedule, labor costs, and the condition of your equipment.
Too often, stripping is treated as an afterthought. Crews finish the pour, move on to the next task, and come back later without a clear plan. That’s when problems start to show up. Panels can be difficult to remove, hardware gets misplaced, and valuable time is lost sorting through materials that weren’t organized during teardown. On the other hand, when stripping is planned from the start, everything moves more efficiently. Panels come down in sequence, are cleaned immediately, and are stacked in a way that prepares them for the next use.
The type of formwork system you use also plays a role. Well-maintained Steel-Ply and SurePly systems are designed to strip cleanly when used with proper release agents and correct tie placement. Choosing the right ties, whether X-Flat or Heavy Duty Loop, helps ensure predictable breakback and easier removal, especially on larger or more complex walls. Small decisions made during setup can save hours when it’s time to strip.
There’s also a bigger-picture benefit. Efficient stripping allows crews to reset forms faster, which is especially important on projects with repetitive pours. When materials are handled properly, they last longer, perform better, and reduce the need for repairs or replacements down the line. It’s a simple shift in mindset: instead of thinking of stripping as the end of one phase, treat it as the beginning of the next.
At Forming America, we work with contractors to make sure their forming systems perform from the first panel set to the final strip.
